A behavioral health technician (BHT), sometimes called a behavioral health assistant (BHA), is a health care practitioner who works directly under the supervision of a mental health professional.

BHTs carry out a number of responsibilities for patients and clients in mental health facilities, psychiatric hospitals, and other situations.

BHTs generally work under the supervision of licensed mental health professionals.

They usually spend most of their time working with patients or clients.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for Behavioral Health Technician to work with our team in providing excellent care to our patients. The ideal candidate will have a background in psychology or a related field, and be able to work well with our team of professionals.

Behavioral Health Technician Duties:

  • Implement quality behavioral health care programs, meeting all contractual obligations of medical services, and monitoring, assessing, modifying, and documenting progress
  • Perform assessments, treatment planning, therapeutic interventions, and goal setting for behavioral health care clients
  • Provide clinical guidance, supervision, and support for behavioral health care staff
  • Maintain confidentiality and adherence to all HIPPA requirements
  • Monitor client progress in all stages of treatment
  • Decide which treatments are appropriate for individual clients
  • Conduct clinical assessments and evaluations
  • Implement plans which address the needs of each client

Behavioral Health Technician Responsibilities:

  • Performs psychoeducational assessment, counseling, and referral services
  • Conduct individual, group, and family therapy for children and adolescents
  • Prescribe psychotropic medications, including antidepressant, antipsychotic, mood stabilizer, and stimulant medications
  • Monitor medication compliance
  • Provide emergency services
  • Enroll clients in one or more group programs, including social skills training, cognitive behavioral therapy, family therapy, and substance abuse treatment
  • Assist in the home management of mentally ill or developmentally disabled persons
  • Communicate with schools, social service agencies, and other community agencies
  • Encourage clients for participation in recreational and/or community activities
  • Perform clerical duties as needed

Requirements And Skills:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1-2 years’ experience providing mental health/substance abuse treatment to a specified population
  • Knowledge of and experience with psychiatric, psychological, social and developmental issues
  • Knowledge of and experience with pharmacological and psychological treatments
