A botanist is a scientist who specializes in the study of plants.

The term botanist is derived from the Greek root botanoi (οὐράνοιον), which is related to βότανος, meaning “food”.

Plants are often referred to as “the green world”, and botanists study the plants of the world.

Botany is considered part of the larger botanical sciences, which are the broader sciences of biology.

The scientific study of plants is a wide field, and botanists study plants through many different methods, in theory or in practice.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for a Botanist to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for plants and a strong knowledge of botanical principles. They will be responsible for conducting research, managing our nursery, and overseeing our landscaping projects. Botanist Duties:

  • Develop and maintain relationships with customers as a representative of the botanizing society
  • Assist site managers in plant management by overseeing daily operations including directing goods to be produced, scheduling employees, and scheduling work procedures
  • Work closely with management, colleagues, and vendors to ensure plant profitability by managing inventories, costs, and revenues
  • Responsible for the accurate bookkeeping of plant operations
  • Review plant performance and plant operations and make recommendations for improvement
  • Gather, analyze, and interpret data for developing strategic and tactical plans, forecasts, and budgets
  • Develop work schedules and work plans

Botanist Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and cultivate the inventory, species, and vegetation of the 50,000+ plant collection with proper care, display, and collection
  • Work with the Curator of Living Collections to develop and implement collections management strategies and practices
  • Research, develop, and write materials that document the collections including plant identifications and habitat descriptions
  • Create signage and labels for the collection displays
  • Identify and implement new plant and soil collections
  • Maintain the 35,000+ animal collection, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates, including species native to and non-native to the United States
  • Research, identify, and document native and non-native animal species, and curate the museum’s natural history collection, including fossils and taxidermy
  • Re-catalog and inventory the collections, including the seed, herbarium,

Requirements And Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in botany or related field
  • 3+ years of professional experience in botany research, documentation, or development
  • Experience with plant identification, field sampling, and laboratory analysis
  • Knowledge of plant taxonomy, classification, and evolution
