Camp Counselor Job Description

Camp counselors are employees who work with children at camps, or in recreational settings, during non-school hours, such as during weekends or during the summer.

Typical duties for camp counselors include educating children, helping them learn new activities, and supervising and keeping track of the children.

Some camp counselors also teach physical education classes for the children.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for Camp Counselor to work at our summer camp. You must be at least 18 years old and have experience working with children.

Camp Counselor Duties:

  • Help create and maintain a safe, educational environment by supervising campers
  • Maintain proper supervision of children at all times
  • Stock supplies, stock and restocking children’s cabins, maintain cleanliness and hygiene of cabins, and act as a mentor and role model
  • Act as an ambassador of the camp
  • Work as a representative of Camp Menlo at events, festivals, and functions
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Camp Counselor Responsibilities:

  • Work with campers to provide a safe, fun, and healthy environment; maintain camper records; observe and evaluate campers’ behavior and report concerns to camp director
  • Support, motivate, and train other staff
  • Develop, implement, and maintain quality control and safety procedures
  • Administer a camp program; supervise campers during activities
  • Assist in planning and implementing activities according to safety procedures and program goals
  • Maintain a clean, well-maintained, and organized camp environment
  • Keep accurate records including camper medical forms, camp reports, and accounting records
  • Assist with facility maintenance and upkeep

Requirements And Skills:

  • High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 2+ years of experience working with children in a camp setting
  • experience with leading and guiding groups of children
  • experience with supervising children
  • experience with planning and implementing activities
  • ability to plan and conduct activities with children
