A Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) is a healthcare professional who has completed a minimum of 120 hours of formal education in the evaluation, management, and prevention of diabetes, in addition to 1,500 hours of supervised clinical experience.

The American Diabetes Association is the national certifying agency for diabetes educators.

CDEs work in private practices, clinics, hospitals, and pharmacies, as well as in the public school system.

A Certified Diabetes Educator is qualified to assess, diagnose, and treat diabetes.

They evaluate, make modifications, and prescribe medications and treatments to diabetic patients.

Job Brief:

We are looking for a Certified Diabetes Educator to help us provide the best possible care for our patients. The ideal candidate will have experience working with patients with diabetes, and will be able to provide education and support to help them manage their condition.

Certified Diabetes Educator Duties:

  • Provide diabetes education to individuals with type 2 diabetes
  • Deliver diabetes education to patients with type 1 diabetes
  • Provide prediabetes or diabetes management education to individuals with diabetes, prediabetes, obesity, or hypertension
  • Provide one-on-one diabetes self-management education
  • Deliver diabetes education to underserved populations
  • Provide self-management education classes
  • Provide diabetes education to self-managing patients
  • Provide diabetes education to people with diabetes and their families
  • Co-facilitate diabetes self-management education sessions
  • Design, develop, implement, and evaluate diabetes self-management education curricula
  • Evaluate effectiveness of diabetes education programs

Certified Diabetes Educator Responsibilities:

  • Supervise diabetes programs that enhance quality of life for individuals with diabetes and their caregivers, including diabetes education, exercise, and nutrition
  • Design and implement patient education programs, ongoing patient follow-up, and promotion of healthy lifestyle choices
  • Create and revise patient information materials, including patient education materials on understanding diabetes, medical nutrition therapy, and insulin adjustment, and patient education plans for newly diagnosed patients
  • Develop patient education curriculum for referral to physicians
  • Participate in quality improvement and educational programs providing opportunities for patients to improve diabetes control
  • Develop communication with patient advisory board
  • Provide ongoing support to patients and their families
  • Provide support for internal/external diabetes clinics

Requirements And Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, dietetics, or a related field
  • 5+ years of related experience
  • Strong knowledge of diabetes management
  • Extensive knowledge of diabetes-related nutrition, sanitation, and food preparation
  • Extensive knowledge of insurance regulations
