A certified nurse-midwife is a registered nurse who has completed an additional 2 to 3 years of education at a graduate-level institution.

Certified Nurse Midwife Duties:

  • Provide health care services and instruction to women during all phases of normal childbearing to term. This includes the management of normal and high-risk pregnancies, as well as the care of the newborn infant.
  • Provide physical, mental, and health education.
  • Provide individual nursing care and inservices to nurses, midwives, and other health care providers.
  • Provide medical care for sick women.
  • Manage the labor and delivery unit, including scheduling, admissions, deliveries, and discharges.
  • Practice midwifery, including performing exam, initiating labor, and assisting with delivery.
  • Supervise staff, including nurses, medical assistants, and orderlies.
  • Assist physicians with medical decisions.
  • Participate in case management.
  • Maintain records, including patient demographics, and laboratory tests and procedures.
  • Recommend changes in policies, procedures

Certified Nurse Midwife Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a liaison between facilities and ownership, providing technical assistance and consultation; review physician contract agreements; review and resolve physician billing issues; resolve physician grievances; and hire, train, and evaluate physician staff
  • Review patient charts and medical records to assess patient needs and prognoses; implement treatment plans based on findings; and ensure compliance with CAP guidelines
  • Maintain and administer medical records in accordance with HIPAA regulations and Joint Commission standards; ensure patient and facility confidentiality
  • Manage on-call schedule and provide coverage during vacations and after hours
  • Oversee the discharge process, including proper disposition, disposition authorization, authorizations for transfer of records, and discharge summaries
  • Oversee nursing and medical staffing, including interviewing, hiring, training, and evaluating staff; reviewing performance appraisals; and resolving complaints
  • Perform annual healthcare assessments
  • Assist in interpreting and evaluating laboratory

Requirements And Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing
  • Current, active unencumbered RN license in the Commonwealth of PA
  • A valid PA driver’s license and reliable vehicle
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to motivate both those under you and those you supervise
