What is a Certified Nursing Assistant? A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is a healthcare professional who provides basic patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse.

CNAs may provide many of the services of an RN, including taking vital signs and administering medication.

CNAs are required to complete an accredited training program and pass a state certification exam before becoming certified.

CNAs must also continue to learn throughout their career to maintain their skills.

A CNA is responsible for performing general nursing tasks such as bathing and feeding patients, as well as clerical work such as changing linens and maintaining patient records.

Certified Nursing Assistant Duties:

  • Learn the long-term care industry and the specific requirements of each facility
  • Helps residents maintain independence level
  • Provides direct resident care, including physical, emotional, and social needs
  • Assist in maintaining clean, safe, and comfortable resident environments
  • Instruct residents in basic care and activities of daily living
  • Help residents maintain their privacy and dignity
  • Maintains confidentiality
  • Inform supervisors of any issues or problems

Certified Nursing Assistant Responsibilities:

  • Current, unencumbered nursing license from a state recognized nursing board
  • Ability to perform basic nursing functions, including CPR
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to follow specific directions
  • Knowledge of basic health and safety

  • Assist the practitioner with patient assessment, treatment, and care

  • Responsible for assisting patients to their prescribed activities
  • Clarify patient concerns and questions
  • Perform routine cleaning, assist with personal hygiene, and maintain a safe environment
  • Act as a liaison between patients, families, and other healthcare team members
  • Maintain documentation, including performance notes and reports
  • Cooperate with facility policies and procedures
  • Report safety hazards, including patient injuries
  • Assist with emergency procedures
