Church Custodian Job Description

A church custodian is a person responsible for overseeing and maintaining the physical structure, grounds, and church buildings of a church.

This person may be a volunteer or paid employee.

This person may be called upon to handle a variety of concerns that arise.

They may be required to repair the building’s electrical system.

They may be required to oversee routine maintenance of the building and grounds.

They are often called upon to perform minor renovations and repairs.

Additionally, this person may be asked to oversee construction projects and to manage the church’s facilities.

While typically a paid position, church custodians may also volunteer their time.

Job Brief:

We are looking for a Church Custodian to help keep our church clean and organized. The Custodian will be responsible for sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming the church floors; cleaning the bathrooms; and dusting and polishing the furniture. The Church Custodian will also be responsible for setting up and taking down chairs and tables for church events, and for keeping the church grounds clean.

Church Custodian Duties:

  • Supervise the maintenance, upkeep and cleanliness of all church areas, including interior and exterior
  • Maintain inventory and file organization systems
  • Assist in managing church finances
  • Assist in event planning and management

Church Custodian Responsibilities:

  • Manage all operational aspects of the church custodial department, including hiring and training of custodial staff, scheduling, and supervising work to ensure operational excellence
  • Ensure all church materials are properly organized and stored including supplies and equipment, furniture, fixtures, carpet, flooring, and other building elements
  • Maintain a hygiene program for the church, including cleaning, ironing, laundry, laundry supplies, trash disposal, and pest control
  • Enhance the church environment by improving and optimizing all building systems, and supervise preventive maintenance programs
  • Manage maintenance and remodeling projects, ensuring that projects are completed on schedule and within budget
  • Establish systems and procedures to ensure efficient operations of the church
  • Maintain the church’s building security plan
  • Schedule and coordinate routine maintenance of the church’s HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection systems
  • Monitor interior conditions of the facility, including HVAC

Requirements And Skills:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Ability to operate various office machines, such as copiers, fax machines, etc.
  • Knowledge of custodial and repair services
  • Ability to perform clerical duties, such as answering phones, greeting visitors, etc.
