Criminalist Job Description

A criminalist, also called a forensic scientist, is a scientist, toxicologist, or other expert who examines crime scenes in order to determine the nature of a crime and the perpetrators involved.

Job Brief

We’re looking for Criminalist to join our team to help us investigate and solve crimes.

Criminalist Duties

  • Provide forensic services for multiple criminal cases, which involves lab procedures, site investigations, and gathering and interpreting evidence
  • Perform chemical analysis on samples provided by law enforcement
  • Perform all other phases of research work under the direct supervision of a supervising criminalist
  • Establish and maintain favorable working relationships with clients
  • Conduct research and study the nature of crime
  • Maintain a forensic laboratory
  • Maintain a high standard of professionalism

Criminalist Responsibilities

  • Performed all required tests and analyses, including blood alcohol, blood/urine trace, controlled substance, and hair and fiber analysis reports; prepared written reports
  • Managed and evaluated staff
  • Gathered, analyzed, and interpreted data
  • Developed and implemented process improvements
  • Oversaw staff training and development
  • Asked appropriate questions and provided effective feedback
  • Provided excellent client service

Requirements And Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Chemistry, biology, physics, forensic science or a related scientific degree program
  • Voluntary certification is available
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; critical thinking and analytical skills; organizational skills; great attention to detail; knowledge of crime scene protocol and procedures, accurately use laboratory equipment and associated computer programs; operate a digital camera to record physical evidence
  • Some state and federal positions require candidates to pass a standardized test for appointment to a criminalist position; valid driver’s license
