The deckhand is an entry-level position in seafaring.

As a deckhand, you serve as an assistant to a captain or second mate (the captain’s assistant).

A deckhand is responsible for the maintenance and organization of the vessel’s deck, which includes its exterior.

Typically, a deckhand is hired as a seaman.

Once hired, you will be trained on how to operate and maintain the vessel’s equipment, including the engine, ship’s systems, and deck equipment.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for Deckhand to work on our luxury yacht. You will be responsible for cleaning and maintaining the deck, as well as assisting with other duties as needed. This is a great opportunity to see the world and learn new skills.

Deckhand Duties:

  • Maintain clean, safe and productive work environments for deckhands and office personnel
  • Assist with maintenance and repair of vessels
  • Comply with all federal, state, and local boating laws
  • Maintain physical inventory on vessels
  • Interact with customers and vessel owners in a professional manner

Deckhand Responsibilities:

  • Perform duties which include, but are not limited to, cleaning vessel, navigating vessel, assisting in navigation and removal of derelict crab pots
  • Reporting any safety or hazard concerns to the Captain, Assistant Captain, or Deckhand
  • Carry out safety, maintenance, and housekeeping requirements
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements And Skills:

  • Able to lift 50 lbs. repeatedly
  • Ability to anchor, trim and fasten deck boards
  • Ability to use hand and power tools
  • Ability to perform minor repairs
  • Knowledge of deck construction
  • Ability to operate a forklift
