A dental hygienist is a professional who gives dental treatments and preventive oral care.

Dental Hygienist Duties:

  • Supervise/assist in dental hygiene procedures, including taking and developing x-rays, and preparing patients for appointments
  • Provide information about proper oral hygiene to patients
  • Perform treatment on patients, including preventive and restorative procedures
  • Proactively evaluate progress and effectiveness of patients’ treatment
  • Provide information on dental hygiene to office manager, patients, and general public
  • Maintain and update patient records
  • Provide instruction to dental laboratory technicians regarding proper techniques
  • Coordinate scheduling for patients
  • Oversee reception staff and office operations

Dental Hygienist Responsibilities:

  • Provides a social, preventive and educational service
  • Examines oral cavities for abnormalities and signs of disease
  • Dentists may also remove plaque and tartar from teeth
  • Performs routine dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants
  • Completes exams, x-rays, and other patient history-taking procedures
  • Applies topical fluorides to patients
  • Dentists provide dental care and prophylaxis to children aged 0-5 years, including developing oral health plans, assessing diet, and educating parents
  • Performs other tasks as necessary

Requirements And Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene or related fields
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team setting
  • Ability to confidently present and communicate to patient, clinicians, and the community
