A direct care worker is an individual that provides direct care to patients in nursing homes, assisted living homes, and hospitals.

Direct care workers are normally not allowed to handle food, silverware, or any type of personal possessions.

This job requires sound judgment and careful management of the patients’ personal belongings.

Job Brief

We’re looking for a Direct Care Worker to provide assistance to clients with activities of daily living and other basic needs. The Direct Care Worker will also be responsible for supporting clients in achieving their goals and objectives.

Direct Care Worker Duties

  • Provide personal care to clients under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Assist clients in meeting their personal needs
  • Perform a variety of supportive tasks in a health care setting
  • Perform a variety of tasks related to house keeping
  • Maintains professional standards of behavior, appearance and hygiene
  • Maintain client’s environment
  • Perform all job duties in accordance with state, federal and professional guidelines
  • Maintain confidentiality of client information and records
  • Maintain all records required by state and federal regulations
  • Report all incidents, accidents, and client complaints to the RN
  • Complete regular client communication forms
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and professional development activities
  • Complete required manual and electronic training
  • Maintain work areas clean and organized
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Direct Care Worker Responsibilities

  • Provide in-home support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through companionship, personal care, household chores, and other tasks
  • Work with clients in their homes for 60-90 minutes/day, and the option to extend for 30 minutes/day
  • Answer phones, respond to inquiries, and perform data entry
  • Assist clients with daily activities, including hygiene, dressing, bathing, and medication administration
  • Take notes and record observations to help caregivers provide care
  • Assist in transportation to appointments or for errands
  • Perform other duties as assigned
