A draftsman is a person who prepares architectural drawings.

A draftsman draws up floor plans and other plans for new buildings and additions.

He/she may also draw plans for remodeling and renovations.

A draftsman works with an architect to create exact plans for all structural, mechanical, and electrical aspects of a building.

This includes how rooms will be shaped, where doors will open, how windows will be positioned, and where plumbing and electrical wires will be installed.

Draftsman Duties:

  • Draft detailed engineering plans, drawings, and other documents.
  • Proactively seek ways to improve current operations.
  • Ensure all engineering work is accurate, clear, and concise.
  • Work with other team members to ensure projects are completed efficiently, on time, and within budget.
  • Maintain and improve operational processes.

Draftsman Responsibilities:

  • Use computer-aided design software to create 2D and 3D architectural renderings, floor plans, and elevation drawings.
  • Edit, proofread, and prepare drawings for submittal to architects, engineers, and contractors.
  • Read and interpret architectural and building codes.
  • Analyze and report building performance, using data from building management systems, and apply code and product knowledge to make recommendations for improvements.
  • Outline, build, modify, and test mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems using 3D modeling software.
  • Assist in locating sites for buildings and advise owners on zoning, zoning variances, and similar issues.
  • Use Building Information Modeling software to assist with the design of buildings based on client requirements.
  • Conduct meetings with clients, architects, engineers, contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Attend meetings, conferences, and other training sessions on new products, techniques, and codes.

Requirements And Skills:

  • 3+ years’ drafting or related experience.
  • Basic working knowledge of AutoCAD.
  • Basic knowledge of construction methods and building codes.
  • Ability to analyze blueprints/technical drawings.
