An electrician is a person who installs and troubleshoots electrical wiring, and circuitry in homes, businesses, and factories.

Electricians install and repair electrical wiring and circuitry for electrical systems, including appliances, light fixtures, wiring, and outlets.

Electricians also install and maintain building electrical systems, including lighting, heating, and air conditioning.

Some electricians install security alarms, and electrical devices for elevators.

An electrician can work either independently or in teams with construction and maintenance workers.

They may work indoors, outdoors, or both.

Electrician Duties:

  • Perform general electrical work.
  • Install, maintain, and repair wiring, outlets, fixtures, and appliances.
  • Establish and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Interpret blueprints, sketches, diagrams, or schematics.
  • Estimate material, equipment, or labor costs.
  • Establish and maintain schedules.
  • Perform electrical troubleshooting.
  • Perform calculations and measurements.
  • Maintain records.
  • Supervise or train other workers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Electrician Responsibilities:

  • Perform electrical construction tasks, including the installation of electrical components and equipment, such as wiring, switches, and conduits, and terminating cables; install wiring and lighting systems.
  • Perform electrical installation in new buildings, or in existing buildings or industry facilities.
  • Perform basic electrical maintenance tasks.
  • Perform troubleshooting and diagnostic functions.
  • Install components of electrical systems, such as circuit breakers, transformers, and other protective devices.
  • Install, test, and maintain electrical equipment, such as pumps, motors, generators, compressors, and transformers.
  • Install and repair electrical wiring.
  • Install and maintain lighting fixtures, lighting controls, and electrical systems.
  • Provide electrical engineering expertise regarding electrical installation, equipment, and systems.
  • Install and maintain electrical systems in industrial facilities.
  • Maintain electrical equipment and wiring, such as circuit breakers, transformers, switches, and lamps.

Requirements And Skills:

  • Electrical license.
  • 2+ years’ proven experience in electrical repair and installation.
  • Knowledge of electrical code requirements.
  • Knowledge of voltage and amperage requirements, electrical testing and troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of jobsite safety practices required.
