A GIS analyst (geographic information systems analyst) is a person that applies geographic information and technology to support an organization’s goals.

GIS analysts, as the title implies, utilize geographic information as well as GIS applications (computer-aided design), for completing tasks.

GIS analysts support not only an organization’s daily operations, but are also involved in strategic planning and policy-making.

GIS analysts are also involved in managing and employing ESRI’s ArcGIS software suite, as well as using web-based GIS platforms.

GIS Analyst Duties:

  • Analyze information according to GIS standards
  • Conduct GIS analysis to help inform business decisions
  • Ensure quality control of and compliance with GIS data
  • Describe methods of acquiring, analyzing, and presenting GIS data
  • Understand geographic information systems (GIS) and geographic information science (GISS) concepts
  • Use GIS data to provide strategic direction to departments in an enterprise
  • Use GISS tools to manipulate, prepare, and display GIS data
  • Develop and maintain GIS databases, maps, and reports

GIS Analyst Responsibilities:

  • Create and maintain GIS databases for tracking construction activities
  • Maintain CAD drawings, GIS data, and database structure using ESRI ArcMap
  • Perform field data collection and inspections, and create 3D topographic models using laser scanners
  • Assist with image and data analysis for construction activities
  • Maintain and update all construction-related data including planning, permit applications, and project documents
  • Use ArcGIS Pro to create and maintain GIS maps and reports
