Mail Sorter Job Description

A mail sorter is a machine used to sort mail before it is delivered to a post office.

A mail sorter may sort mail for up to five post offices at a time.

Mail sorters use a number of different processes to sort mail.

Some sorters use a combination of mechanical and manual sorting.

Others use a vibrating sorter, a folding sorter, a stapling sorter, or a stacking sorter.

A paper sorter uses a rotary vane or belt to sort mail into letters, flats, or packets of varying sizes.

We’re looking for Mail Sorter to join our team and help us sort through the mountains of mail we receive every day. If you’re organized, detail-oriented, and have a strong work ethic, we want you!

Mail Sorter Duties:

  • Sorts incoming mail into priority categories for delivery or mass removal according to established procedures and guidelines
  • Sorts, examines, and routes mail according to format and weight
  • Sorts, examines, and routes mail to the proper regional or branch office for delivery or mass removal
  • Bills
  • Provides information to supervisors and coworkers as needed
  • Assesses new procedures to make sure work is conducted according to standard procedures
  • Provides information to mail distribution clerks and supervisors
  • Provides information to customers and walk-in customers
  • Provides information to guests

Mail Sorter Responsibilities:

  • Complete mail sorting tasks including sorting, bundling, and bagging mail
  • Assist in sorting mail and other supplies
  • Collect mail from delivery truck, sort, bundle, and bag it
  • Deliver mail to appropriate destination
  • Maintain work area in a neat, clean, and efficient manner
  • Ensure compliance with postal standards and regulations

Requirements And Skills:

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Performs tasks associated with sorting and disposing of mail, such as sorting letters and packages, removing pieces to be discarded, and discarding damaged or otherwise unacceptable mail
  • Identify and segregate mail based on type of mail, destination, and origin, using dividers
