Mental Health Specialist Duties:

  • Provide psychological services for patients in specific programs
  • Provide counseling and support services to those in need of assistance
  • Operate programs supporting health, education, and social services, including prevention and early intervention services
  • Promote and coordinate programs, services, and activities that address community needs
  • Research and study community needs and implements solutions
  • Development, management, and monitoring of policies, procedures, and programs
  • Provide referrals
  • Lead, direct, and train staff
  • Train staff in program development
  • Maintain necessary records
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Mental Health Specialist Responsibilities:

  • Provide individual and group counseling to patients who are deaf, blind or deafblind, and provide residential therapy to individuals, couples, and families on a 24-hour basis
  • Counsel patients on social and emotional functioning, managing stress, and adjusting to limitations
  • Obtain medical, therapeutic, diagnostic, and environmental information
  • Identify and consult with other mental health specialists, specialists on special conditions, and physicians
  • Collaborate with social workers, psychologists, and other mental health personnel
  • Provide technical assistance to families of deafblind patients
  • Develop and evaluate programs, policies, and procedures, and conduct research and service evaluations in order to improve services
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements And Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or related field
  • 2+ years’ direct experience with mental health patients
  • Experience with treatment planning, client/family education, case management, and therapeutic interventions
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology and behavioral health principles
