Mental Health Therapist Job Description

Mental health therapists are licensed professionals who provide counseling, psychotherapy, and psychoanalysis, and may specialize in the treatment of specific mental health disorders.

Mental health therapists work in a variety of settings, such as private practice, community mental health centers, hospitals, schools, and in substance abuse and mental health recovery treatment centers.

Mental health therapists must have a master’s degree, licensure, and certification in order to be practicing.

Due to a 2009 law, all mental health therapists were required to become licensed by 2012.
