Mental health therapists are licensed professionals who provide counseling, psychotherapy, and psychoanalysis, and may specialize in the treatment of specific mental health disorders.

Mental health therapists work in a variety of settings, such as private practice, community mental health centers, hospitals, schools, and in substance abuse and mental health recovery treatment centers.

Mental health therapists must have a master’s degree, licensure, and certification in order to be practicing.

Due to a 2009 law, all mental health therapists were required to become licensed by 2012.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for a Mental Health Therapist to help our clients improve their well-being. The therapist will work with clients to identify and manage their stressors, develop positive coping mechanisms, and help them build a support network.

Mental Health Therapist Duties:

  • Assist individuals who are experiencing emotional, social, or behavioral issues
  • Investigate symptoms associated with various disorders
  • Educate patient’s and family members about disorders and treatments
  • Provide patient’s family with educational tools and resources

Mental Health Therapist Responsibilities:

  • Provide treatment to clients, including individual, family, and couples therapy
  • Work from a written treatment plan and from a variety of therapeutic approaches
  • Design, conduct, and evaluate individual and group therapeutic programs
  • Assist clients with identifying and resolving personal issues
  • Provide crisis intervention
  • Assist clients with accessing community resources
  • Maintain client records and documentation
  • Control clinical and administrative budgets
  • Stay abreast of advances in mental health treatment
  • Maintain safe, secure, and healthy working environment
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements And Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in counseling, psychology, or related field
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working with adolescents, adults, and families
  • Knowledge of behavioral and mental health assessment (assessments, therapy, and treatment plans)
  • Skills in diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders
