Nursing Assistant Job Description

A nursing assistant (also called a nursing aide or certified nursing assistant) is a person who provides basic caregiving services, under the close supervision of a Registered Nurse or licensed practical nurse.

A nursing assistant usually works in a nursing home or assisted living facility, although nursing assistants in hospitals and other settings also exist.

Nursing assistants may be certified in various ways, including by passing an exam, obtaining state licensure, or enrolling in a nurse aide training program.

Job Brief:

Nursing Assistant Duties:

  • Develop and implement strategies to ensure quality care for residents and team members, and collaborate across the organization
  • Assist residents with activities of daily living
  • Provide emotional support to residents by engaging in activities, offering comfort, and persuading them to participate in activities
  • Provide support and assistance when team members are absent
  • Maintain a safe environment for residents and team members
  • Perform other duties as requested

Nursing Assistant Responsibilities:

  • Working knowledge of basic nursing principles
  • Ability to assist residents with personal care and hygiene
  • Ability to perform general housekeeping duties
  • Ability to communicate effectively with residents, family members, and medical staff
