An occupational therapist assistant (OTA) is a rehabilitation therapist who works with physically or mentally disabled patients.

An OTA works under the supervision of an occupational therapist and is trained to help patients achieve their maximum physical, mental, and social function.

Many OTAs work in rehabilitation centers, but they can also work in home settings.

OTAs work with people who have various conditions such as arthritis, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, autism, or depression and have limitations in performing daily activities.

Occupational Therapist Assistant Duties:

  • Complete documentation and assist occupational therapists in providing therapy to patients
  • Assist occupational therapists with administration of therapy

  • Perform treatment procedures such as treatment implementation, implementation of occupational therapy assistants’ procedures, mechanical stimulation, therapeutic use of self, and therapeutic recreation
  • Perform initial and ongoing evaluation of patients to determine effectiveness of treatment plans and statutory guidelines
  • Evaluate progress of treatment plans and treatment plans developed by occupational therapist assistants, using a variety of methods, including assessments, ongoing patient observation, patient feedback, and clinical judgment
  • Maintain patient records and treatment logs
  • Conduct patient interviews and perform psycho-educational assessments to determine areas of need
