A project accountant is responsible for completing financial tasks associated with specific projects.

Project accountants may be assigned to individual projects or to larger project teams where one person is responsible for overseeing a group of project accountants.

Project accountants perform tasks during project planning, execution, and closeout.

For project planning, an accountant will analyze costs and revenues of the project and forecast income and expenses during execution.

During the project execution stage, an accountant is responsible for completing accounting tasks, such as recording accounts receivable, accounts payable, and revenue.

During the project closeout stage, an accountant is responsible for closing out the project’s accounting tasks and recording project results.

Project Accountant Duties:

  • Review and process accounting documents
  • Perform a variety of accounting tasks
  • Work closely with other accounting professionals
  • Present and explain financial information to management
  • Track budget variances, and monitor expenses
  • Conduct research, analyze data, and prepare financial reports and special projects as needed
  • Assist in analysis and preparation of annual budgets
  • Conduct accounting audits or reviews to determine accuracy and validity of financial records

Project Accountant Responsibilities:

  • Control project costs by maintaining accurate cost information, forecasts, and budgets, and identifying opportunities for financial improvement and cost reduction
  • Develop feasibility studies and construct models for the estimation of project costs
  • Maintain accurate project budgets; assist in analyzing variances for adjustments
  • Plan and forecast cash flow and capital expenditures
  • Control vendor accounts and purchase orders
  • Conduct financial analysis, including accruals, prepayments, and return on investment studies
  • Prepare financial reports and presentations for management and shareholders
  • Manage cash flow, and consolidate revenue, asset, and liability reports for projects
  • Prepare tax reports for federal and state entities
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management

Requirements And Skills:

  • Proven experience managing and coordinating multiple projects and/or multiple budgets
  • Knowledge of industry standard accounting practices and principles
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to manage multiple projects while effectively interfacing with internal and external stakeholders
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
