Purchasing Manager (PM), also called a purchasing agent, is a top-level executive within a company charged with buying goods and services for the company.

Purchasing Manager Duties:

  • Maintain a purchasing department that optimizes efficiency, ensures accuracy, and capitalizes on opportunities
  • Implement purchasing strategies to reduce waste
  • Ensure purchasing activities are in compliance with government regulations, industry standards, and company policy
  • Review vendor contracts to assure they have applicable practices and are in compliance with company policy

Purchasing Manager Responsibilities:

  • Understand each department’s requirements, identify and prioritize needs, and conduct market research to identify potential suppliers
  • Develop, implement, and review purchasing policies, procedures, and systems to ensure supplies, materials, and equipment are competitively priced, timely, and of high quality
  • Assist in all phases of the procurement process (e.g., vendor selection and evaluation, negotiation, material evaluation, and contract administration)
  • Coordinate efforts with sales, engineering, manufacturing, and finance
  • Perform market research and construct RFI responses, RFPs, and proposals
  • Ensure all materials, supplies, and equipment are received, warehoused, and inventoried accurately, and that expired, damaged, and obsolete goods are discarded
  • Prepare and submit purchase orders, invoices, and credit memos
  • Control inventory, stock levels, and expiration dates

Requirements And Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or related field
  • 2+ years experience in purchasing, purchasing administration, or purchasing management
  • Knowledge of purchasing practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of common purchasing and supply management strategies, methods, and techniques
