Underwriter Job Description

Underwriters are people who write insurance policies.

An underwriter is a person who insures businesses or individuals, also called the underwriting department.

The underwriters at an insurance company are responsible for evaluating the risk involved in various insurance policies.

Typically, the underwriter will decide whether or not to approve a policy application.

Insurance companies should select underwriters who possess the necessary insurance and business experience to assess the risk involved in each proposed policy.

Underwriters also have a vital role in setting premiums, or the charges insurers charge consumers for coverage.

The premium is the amount of money an insurance company charges for insuring a specific risk.
