A vice president of human resources (VPHR) is a senior HR professional who is typically responsible for overseeing the daily functions of Human Resources, including recruitment, benefits, compensation, training, employee relations, and payroll.

In addition, a VPHR often oversees other career development programs.

VPHRs normally have a large workload, managing a department or multiple departments, and may direct the work of HR assistants.

VPHRs are often involved in developing HR policies, compensation plans, and strategies for attracting and retaining employees and for increasing productivity.

Vice President (VP) of HR Duties:

  • Develop HR policies, programs, and procedures
  • Provide guidance and direction to company employees on HR and/or employment-related issues
  • Provide ongoing training and development of HR staff
  • Manage, motivate, train, and supervise HR staff members
  • Provide general guidance on all HR functions
  • Provide information as required to all company employees
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with company employees, managers, and owners
  • Provide support and guidance to employees on employee complaints and/or problems
  • Evaluate employee performance
  • Identify and assess staffing needs
  • Promote company policy
  • Establish and enforce HR policies, regulations, and procedures

Vice President (VP) of HR Responsibilities:

  • Provide HR expertise to senior management for all employee relations matters, including performance management, recruitment/retention, and training/development
  • Manage HR programs, policies, and procedures, as well as compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations
  • Manage compensation and benefits, including compensation surveys, budget planning and tracking, and tax compliance
  • Create and administer on-boarding, off-boarding, sick/vacation, and termination processes
  • Coordinate with legal and accounting departments on payroll, benefits, and employee issues
  • Partner with managers to develop people plans, succession planning, and employee retention strategies
