A deputy sheriff is an officer of the County Sheriff’s Department who performs law enforcement duties.

Deputy Sheriff Duties:

  • Ensure public safety by maintaining respect for the law, enforcing laws, and recognizing and acting on dangerous situations
  • Manage emergency response times by organizing and directing emergency response teams and activities
  • Maintain community relations and cooperation with local, state, and federal authorities
  • Investigate, arrest, process, and detain offenders
  • Monitor, supervise, and discipline employees
  • Maintain inventory and control of all law enforcement equipment
  • Oversee daily operations of jails, detention facilities, and work release centers
  • Ensure jails and detention facilities are kept clean, organized, and properly maintained
  • Approve and inspect all incoming prisoners
  • Maintain confidentiality of prisoners
  • Protect the public by conducting investigations
  • Work with other members of the law enforcement team to ensure public safety

Deputy Sheriff Responsibilities:

  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant laws, statutes, regulations, and ordinances, and effectively communicate this information to clients and other employees
  • Perform administrative duties for Sheriff and other deputies, including scheduling, filing, and maintaining information
  • Serve as on call deputy during emergencies and crises in a leadership role

Requirements And Skills:

  • Must have a valid AZ driver’s license
  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Be a high school graduate or GED equivalent
  • Must have a clean driving record
