Independent Sales Representative or ISR is a sales representative who sells a company’s products or brands without being an employee of the company.

ISRs work for commission, and are usually called “free agents” or “indies”.

Independent sales representatives sell to customers directly and independently of anyone associated with or employed by the company.

ISRs can work for a company or work independently.

Independent Sales Representative Duties:

  • Manage sales to new and existing customers
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing accounts, expanding business
  • Proactively seek out, develop, and manage new business opportunities
  • Establish and maintain a portfolio of customers
  • Establish relationships with sales organizations and other business enterprises
  • Use all available resources (i.e., promotional materials, websites, etc.) to increase sales

Independent Sales Representative Responsibilities:

  • Address customer questions and complaints, and negotiate resolutions to complaints and disputes, sometimes taking legal action to protect company interests
  • Research and evaluate customer needs to determine their buying needs
  • Provide potential customers with information on company products, services, and policies
  • Communicate company goals, objectives, achievements, and plans, and describe the company’s products and services
  • Develop and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with prospects and customers
  • Identify sales leads through referrals, research, and networking

  • Proven sales record of 6+ years
  • Proven sales experience of at least $1 million in sales, with $1.5 million preferred
