Medical Interpreter Job Description

A medical interpreter is an individual trained to communicate medical information between a patient and medical personnel.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for a Medical Interpreter to work with us in order to provide better communication between our medical staff and patients who do not speak English as their first language.

Medical Interpreter Duties:

  • Interpret medical terminology and procedures for patients who do not speak your current language during medical appointments and emergency room visits
  • Work in a team-based atmosphere
  • Create and maintain medical records
  • Provide support for patients or clients
  • Establish and maintain relationships with other medical or non-medical professionals
  • Screen clients for basic medical needs/issues
  • Use computer and office equipment

Medical Interpreter Responsibilities:

  • Attend and chair meetings with clients, physicians, therapists, and other providers, and manage the overall scheduling process
  • Attend and translate medical appointments and therapies, including doctor visits, surgery, rehabilitation, hospitalization, medical tests, and therapy sessions
  • Record client statements and medical histories into medical charts
  • Communicate and facilitate communication between providers and clients, including answering inquiries, scheduling appointments, and verifying insurance
  • Research medical information and ensure that medical charts are accurate and up-to-date
  • Provide client services, including arranging accommodations, coordinating transportation, and assisting with meal preparation
  • Conduct in-services and orientation for new team members

Requirements And Skills:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 6+ months’ experience interpreting for medical professionals
  • Strong medical terminology skills
  • Knowledge of medical administrative systems (i.e. Epic, Cerner, Meditech)
  • Knowledge of HIPAA medical confidentiality rules
