A mortician is a person who prepares the dead for burial.

Morticians often handle the embalming and cleaning process of the deceased.

Embalming is the process of treating a body to delay decomposition.

Embalming is accomplished by removing the body’s blood and replacing it with preservatives (sometimes formaldehyde).

The body’s viscera are removed and cleaned, and organs and tissues are replaced.

Embalming may also include the insertion of special chemicals, such as calcium hydroxide or formaldehyde.

Job Brief:

Mortician Duties:

  • Prepare the deceased for burial according to custom
  • Clean and disinfect the body
  • Prepare the body before burial, such as making a coffin or shroud
  • Arrange for final rites to be performed, such as prayers or a funeral mass
  • Assemble the remains for use in burial
  • Plan, coordinate, supervise, and evaluate the activities of the mortician
  • Arrange and attend funerals
  • Make funeral arrangements
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor

Mortician Responsibilities:

  • Acquire new clients, oversee operations, and manage inventory
  • Manage funeral home staff, including scheduling, hiring, and training
  • Cooperate with agencies, funeral homes, hospitals, and funeral homes to ensure a smooth transition
  • Work with families to process the deceased
  • Manage funeral home facility, including clean-up, maintenance, security, and landscaping
  • Maintain organization through strong leadership, delegation, and organization skills
  • Attend meetings, seminars, and other events
  • Write detailed reports and proposals
  • Perform other duties as assigned
