A radiation oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer using radiation therapy.

A radiation oncologist may often collaborate with other specialists and members of his “team”, such as medical oncologists, surgeons, and radiologists, in the comprehensive care of patients.

Radiation Oncologist Duties:

  • Plan, administer, monitor, and evaluate radiation therapy treatment protocols according to departmental guidelines
  • Recognize, diagnose, treat, and refer patients to both surgical and medical oncology
  • Perform diagnostic radiation procedures
  • Develop treatment plans using FDA-cleared technology in accordance with the patient’s treatment plan
  • Perform procedures and treatments necessary for the implementation of treatment plans
  • Promote positive departmental image by being a positive role model, as well as, exhibiting teamwork and open communication
  • Evaluate current procedures, and work to integrate new or improved techniques into current practice
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Radiation Oncologist Responsibilities:

  • Design, conduct, and report radiation treatment to patients, perform other related duties, such as preparing reports and attending conferences, as needed
  • Design and carry out treatment plans to meet specific treatment objectives
  • Order, distribute, and prescribe radiopharmaceuticals, other supplies, and equipment
  • Attend meetings
  • Supervise staff and trainees
  • Evaluate, monitor, and report on treatment results
  • Act as an expert witness in legal proceedings
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements And Skills:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 1-3 years’ experience as a Radiation Oncology Technician
  • Basic knowledge of radiation therapy and treatment planning
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy
  • Basic knowledge of computer operating systems and applications
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology
  • Basic
