School Resource Officer Job Description

A School Resource Officer (SRO) is a law enforcement officer that is hired by a school district or charter school to provide security for students and staff.

A school resource officer is employed for a minimum of three hours per day, five days per week, and is not paid overtime.

SROs are employed by the school district or charter school.

Officers typically hold the rank of Lieutenant, Sergeant, or Captain.

SROs must have a minimum of three years law enforcement experience, and must have completed a 40-hour firearms training course.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for a School Resource Officer to help protect our students and staff. The ideal candidate will have experience working in a school setting and be able to maintain a positive relationship with students and faculty.

School Resource Officer Duties:

• Serve as a liaison between the school administration, staff, and parents; including, but not limited to: patrol, investigations, crime prevention, and school safety
• Conducts ongoing investigations and patrols of school grounds, buildings, and parcels
• Assists in developing school safety plans, providing continuous training to all school personnel, monitoring school safety and related concerns, and performing any other related duties
• Tracks all incidents that occur on the school premises, recording and investigating all crimes, accidents, and incidents, in addition to performing follow-up activities

School Resource Officer Responsibilities:

• Enforce school safety policies, procedures, and rules to maintain orderly and safe school environment
• Develop relationships with students, staff, and members of the community and develop an on-campus presence while developing, implementing, and maintaining a positive school climate
• Work closely with local law enforcement and school administrators to identify potential school safety threats and ensure appropriate responses
• Train and monitor school safety officers, monitor records, and assist with investigations
• Train in-classroom and on-ground staff on how to recognize, report, and respond to potentially dangerous events

Requirements And Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, law enforcement or related fields
• 1+ years proven experience in school resource officer (SRO) position
• Knowledge and understanding of school safety and policy
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, administrators
