Surgical Technologist Job Description

A surgical technologist (ST or SA) is a medical professional who, under the supervision of a surgeon, performs surgical duties.

Most surgical technologists are registered nurses (RNs) who have graduated from an accredited surgical technology program.

Surgical technologists assist the surgeon during surgery, prepare and sterilize surgical instruments, and assist in the recovery room.

Surgical technologists also educate patients and educate surgeons about the use of surgical instruments.

They prepare operating rooms, bring patients to operating rooms, transport patients from operating rooms, and manage anesthesia.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for a Surgical Technologist to join our team. As a Surgical Technologist, you will be responsible for assisting surgeons in the operating room. This includes preparing the operating room for surgery, sterilizing equipment, and helping to position patients.

Surgical Technologist Duties:

  • Perform technical, administrative, and clerical duties under the direction of the physician/surgeon
  • Assist with surgical procedures on patients under direct supervision
  • Perform laboratory and radiological procedures under the direction of the technologist
  • Prepare patients for surgery, assist in preparing operating rooms, and assist in instrument sterilization
  • Conduct patient interviews and examinations, and collect information on patients’ medical histories
  • Perform instrumental procedures on patients
  • Prepare specimens for laboratory analysis
  • Clean equipment and rooms
  • Perform clerical duties
  • Review records to ensure accuracy
  • Grasp, lift, and transport patients, medical instruments, supplies, and equipment
  • Other duties as assigned

Surgical Technologist Responsibilities:

  • Attend surgeon’s pre- and post-op appointments, and administer anesthesia
  • Perform sterile surgical field duties, including prepping instruments, suturing, and assisting surgeons
  • Assemble operating room components, set up operating rooms, and ensure proper sterilization
  • Assist surgeons with patient education
  • Discuss patient issues, such as pain, concerns, recovery, and follow-up care
  • Review patient charts and documents
  • Perform clerical duties such as answering phones, filing, and copying
  • Keep surgical instruments, supplies, and work surfaces in a clean and organized manner
  • Conduct post-patient evaluation, discharge, and follow-up visit
  • Perform medical duties such as cannulation and venipuncture
  • Perform basic lab work such as collecting samples, analyzing results, and disposing of waste

Requirements And Skills:

  • Current State of Florida Surgical Technologist License
  • 2+ years’ proven experience in operating theatres, operating rooms, pre-op, and recovery areas
  • Knowledge of sterilization techniques
  • Experience with instruments, equipment, and procedures used in operating theatres
  • Skill
