Camera Operator Job Description

A camera operator is a person who operates the camera equipment, or “cameras”, during a video production.

This person is responsible for making sure the camera operators are operating the equipment properly.

They must be able to instruct camera operators on how to operate cameras, adjust camera angles, and maintain equipment.

The director or producer may call upon the camera operator to improvise during a scene if the director or producer has an idea for a shot that the camera operator is responsible for conducting.

The job may require a camera operator to have knowledge of how cameras work, film and lighting techniques, and acting.

Camera Operator Duties:

  • Film, videotape, record, edit, or otherwise reproduce images
  • Identify, adjust, and operate camera, microphone, lighting, sound, and other recording equipment

  • Attending to all technical and operational aspects of assigned camera, including positioning, lighting, and focusing

  • Reporting, editing, and transmitting footage to relevant media

Requirements And Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in photography or media-related field
  • 3+ years’ proven experience as a camera operator
  • Ability to operate multiple cameras simultaneously
  • Possess the ability to adjust to changing conditions
  • Strong knowledge of shooting techniques and equipment
