A sterile processing technician is responsible for preparing the surgical instruments and patient’s equipment for non-surgical procedures.

The sterile processing technician works in a surgical suite and is responsible for ensuring that all surgical instruments and all patient’s equipment are sterile prior to use.

The sterile processing technician is trained in the safe use of chemicals, instruments, and supplies.

In addition, the sterile processing technician must be able to properly sterilize various items, clean, and disinfect the surgical suite, and maintain the sterilization equipment.

Sterile processing technicians are also trained to perform various aseptic and non-aseptic surgical procedures.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for a Sterile Processing Technician to work in our hospital’s Central Sterile Supply Department. The Technician will be responsible for decontaminating, sterilizing, and storing surgical instruments and supplies.

Sterile Processing Technician Duties:

  • Operate and oversee various machines use to process surgical and gynecologic instruments and equipment in sterile and non-sterile environments
  • Understand and follow all safety precautions and procedures
  • Prepare various types of bags for sterilization
  • Assist in placing instruments and equipment in autoclave
  • Participate in inventory checks
  • Prepare product for sterilization
  • Use labeling and coding systems
  • Assist with equipment set up and breakdown
  • Clean equipment and work area
  • Use computers and other applicable technology

Sterile Processing Technician Responsibilities:

  • Current Georgia state license (Surgical Technologist)
  • 1+ years’ experience working in a sterile processing department
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proven ability to follow established

Requirements And Skills:

  • Sterilize, inspect, and package surgical instruments and other medical devices
  • Perform daily quality control checks on the instruments
  • Open, operate, repair, and maintain instrument sterilizers
  • Prepare instruments for sterilization, using various types of sterilization, including ethylene oxide gas, liquid gas, hydrogen peroxide, and steam
  • Restock and stockroom supplies
  • Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and disinfecting of reprocessing areas
  • Prepare instruments for sterilization
  • Complete documentation
