UNIX System Administrator Job Description

The UNIX system administrators and network administrators are responsible for planning, designing, and managing data networks.

They oversee the installation, maintenance, and upgrading of network hardware, servers, and mobile devices.

Depending on the organization, system administrators may oversee computer security, manage websites, develop websites, and troubleshoot computer operations.

UNIX System Administrator Duties:

  • Administer and maintain UNIX based systems; improve existing systems; troubleshoot and resolve system problems; and create, implement, and maintain system security
  • Procure and communicate information about system specifications, requirements, and limitations
  • Install, configure, repair, and maintain UNIX based systems
  • Provide technical support to end users
  • Provide technical support to management
  • Provide technical support to other staff
  • Develop and maintain system documentation

UNIX System Administrator Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and maintain corporate file servers, including equipment, operating systems, software, and applications, including security and disaster recovery plans
  • Make sure network and server systems are up to date and backed up so that information is protected and system uptime is maximized
  • Maintain the corporate intranet and internal websites, including developing, updating, and maintaining security policies and guidelines
  • Work with backup and restore teams to ensure data backups and system refreshes are performed on time
  • Maintain system security by implementing and enforcing security policies, regulations, and standards
  • Troubleshoot network, server, and database problems and provide support to resolve them

Requirements And Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer or information technology or related field
  • 2+ years proven experience in UNIX system administration
  • Strong understanding of UNIX systems administration, including networking, security, server configuration, and database design
  • Knowledge of scripting languages such as Perl, PHP
