A dock worker is the employee who functions at a dock terminal or at a facility along the waterfront, loading and unloading cargo and off-loading vehicles.

Dock workers perform a variety of functions, such as receiving and unloading freight from vehicles, trucks, or ships, loading and unloading bulk cargo, and moving materials in and around the terminal.

Dock workers may assist with terminal operations, such as refueling, fueling, and fueling and cleaning trucks, as well as ship operations such as securing cargo and off-loading materials.

Dock workers are employed in an organization’s dock operations or in an organization’s dispatch.

Dock Worker Duties:

  • Ensure that all materials, equipment, supplies, and personnel are appropriately coordinated to meet project goals

  • Maintain adequate records documenting work activities

Dock Worker Responsibilities:

  • Assist in loading and unloading cargo, freight, and containers from and onto ships, barges, trucks, and trailers
  • Work with shipping and receiving paperwork, maintain inventory, and record data
  • Train new hires on inventory and dock procedures
  • Operate forklifts, hand carts, and pallet jacks to perform warehouse and dock duties
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, procedures, and practices
  • Maintain the cleanliness of work area
  • Maintain safety practices
