An apprenticeship plumber is a plumbing professional who has completed its training as an indentured trainee.

An apprentice plumber is usually employed on a part-time basis, usually 16 to 40 hours a week, completing tasks under the supervision of a fully licensed master plumber.

After an apprentice plumber completes its training, it must pass the National Board for Certification in Plumbing exam to obtain its license.

As of 2006, only nine states require a one-year apprenticeship.

A plumbing license is not required by all states.

However, without one, an apprentice plumber cannot legally practice.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for an Apprentice Plumber to work with our experienced team. You will be required to complete on the job training as well as a Certificate III in Plumbing.

Apprentice Plumber Duties:

  • Assist plumber with the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing systems in occupied residences or commercial establishments, such as restaurants and hotels
  • Work under the direction of plumbers and supervisors
  • Install, maintain, and repair water mains and other water distribution piping, sewage systems, sewage disposal systems, vacuum sewer systems, pressure sewer systems, storm drains, fire sprinkler systems, septic systems, water meters, backflow prevention devices, water softeners, water filters, sewage treatment plants, and septic tanks
  • Maintain accurate records on materials used
  • Perform a variety of tasks involving mechanical installation or repair
  • Repair leaks, cracks, and other damage in plumbing systems
  • Handle materials, tools, and equipment

Apprentice Plumber Responsibilities:

  • Under supervision, learn all aspects of plumbing and HVAC work including pipefitting, drain and waste, water distribution, and refrigeration, as well as perform preventive maintenance on equipment
  • Perform maintenance, repairs, and inspections on plumbing, heating, and cooling equipment, and perform HVAC unit installation, repair, or replacement
  • Interact with customers in a courteous, professional manner at all times
  • Perform all job tasks safely and adhere to standard operating procedures
  • Complete all assigned paperwork
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures
  • Perform related duties as assigned

Requirements And Skills:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 2+ years experience in plumbing maintenance/repair
  • Knowledge of plumbing materials, construction, codes and regulations
  • Knowledge of plumbing maintenance procedures, tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of plumbing systems
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems, maintain tools and equipment
